Summer is coming and you’re likely wondering if you can take your baby on vacation with you. Are you itching to get out? I sure am.

So I invited my friend Sophia Nguyen from Healthy Baby Happy Earth to share some of her best tips on traveling with your baby.

There’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the summer vacations. You just need a few extra tidbits to make it great! Take it away Sophia. 🙂

You Can Take Your Baby On Vacation

Babies are the most precious joy to the world, at least while they are sleeping. Some babies can be a little bit of a hassle when going out. New experiences can be both exciting and scary for baby and parents alike.

Even preparing to travel with baby can seem like one of those daunting tasks that only leads to procrastination. Although, planning a long road trip or flight with baby may not seem so fun at first, it is possible and enjoyable! Here are a few tips to follow so that you and your baby completely enjoy your vacation.

Organize Your Cargo

Don’t be afraid to over pack. All the excitement and fun of traveling can get a little messy, and make you a little extra hungry too.

Pack extra clothes for baby and yourself.
If your baby drinks formula, bring along more than you think you need.
Bring extra frozen breastmilk in a storage bag or a small cooler with ice.
Take along other snacks and beverages for older kids to save money at airports and truck stops.

Making a checklist of everything you will need will become the ‘holy grail’ of your trip. It will help suppress the feeling that you have forgotten something.

Bring along toys or electronics to keep baby entertained.
Before you leave, download apps that work off-line to save on data. Coloring book apps or simple educational apps can promise hours of fun.
Don’t leave your stroller or baby backpack behind.
Triple check your list!

A few things you might not want to forget:

Plastic bag for soiled clothes
Headphones and charging cords for internet devices
Health insurance cards and pain reliever/fever reducer
Baby’s favorite lovie!

In For The Long Haul

I once had to travel 700 miles, from Tennessee to Texas, with my 4-year old son. We chose to travel throughout the night and he slept most of the ride.

We started out driving around 6 pm, making sure we had a good dinner before we hit the road. Before the sun went down, we practiced our alphabet and reading skills using license tags from cars and signs on the side of the road.

We stopped for gas about 3 hours later and got a chance to stretch our legs. Before you knew it, my son was asleep and didn’t wake up until it was time to stop for breakfast.

Night time travel on airplane flights works just as well. Make sure baby is well fed and as comfortable as possible for smooth sailing.

While You’re There

Unpack as soon as you arrive. Try to make your temporary accommodations feel as much like home as possible.

Set up your room like you would your home with a designated changing station, kitchen, and play area with baby’s toys and blankets. A little familiarity in an unfamiliar setting can be very comforting for baby.

Bringing along a stroller or baby backpack can be helpful during nap time if you still want to sight see continue enjoying the theme park.
It’s also smart to schedule your excursions around baby’s usual nap time or book a hotel near to where you will be playing.
Make dinner reservations earlier to avoid large crowds.
And don’t forget to pack some entertainment to occupy baby while you enjoy your food.

Thanks Sophia! I have yet to take any of my little boys on a vacation, and now I’m wishing that we had. The longest trip they’ve been on was to a funeral three hours away and they did just fine.

Now attempting to take an airplane somewhere, that scares the crap out of me! Dealing with car seats and all, gosh. But even so, it doesn’t deter me, nor should it deter you.
