After I read Dr. Bradley’s book, I realized why I was so hypoglycemic quite often because of my lack of sufficient protein.
Many people think that in order to gain more energy they need to up their carbohydrates. Yes, those are important and I certainly would not do without them. But because our bodies take much longer to process and digest protein, that energy last longer.
Now this isn’t a discussion on diet and all the arguments for and against. I don’t even want to touch that.
But by increasing your protein intake when you’re pregnant (even into breastfeeding as well), you can function at your best. If you don’t have your energy, you don’t have anything. And we all know we never seem to have enough right now.
Increasing Protein Intake
Instead of going on about the importance of it, which you can dig into more here, I thought it would just be easier to talk about HOW you can do so, instead of WHY you should. When things are cut and dried and plain in front of our face, it’s easier to just DO.
So I put together a bunch of ideas on how you can increase your protein intake with just some recipe tips for when you’re cooking or making meals. It’s easier than trying to count the exact grams of protein from a meal plan, or trying to configure the best combination of foods on a daily basis.
Just establishing little things here and there in what you regularly eat will add up and you won’t have to worry about the bottom line. Sorry, this isn’t a vegetarian or vegan list, but I’m sure if you are one of those individuals, you’ve become expert at adapting to your own needs. So take your pick!

Wow, I loved all you had to talk about in this article, I love all the Desert ideas, but then again I love almost all deserts! I love the photo of what looks like a cheese cake with apples on top. Yum!
Me too! Try the black bean brownies. They’re really moist and dense that you have to eat them with a fork. Thanks Debra.
Sarah, I really, really must congratulate you on an @m@zing website – wow ! Very impressive indeed to say the least. I wanted to leave you feedback on this page ‘cos I am feeling very …………… hungry !! Just goes to show there are some fun-tastic people in this world with fantastic abilities and characters – and you are one of them ! Wish you and your family the VERY BEST. Regards. Jaspal
I appreciate that so much Jaspal. It’s not everyday one hears such kind words from a stranger either, which says a lot about your wonderful character too. Best to you too!
These tips are very healthy for any diet plan not just for pregnant women. In my house we have a lot of chicken breast and legs, I love cheese, Greek yogurt, I also use barley, chia seeds, flax seeds and a few other things. When pregnant we need to be careful with what we eat, but that isn’t always easy. We feel so tired, and still we have to work inside and outside the house, take care of the kids, the husband….and we stay for last. Thanks for reminding us to take of ourselves too.
You’re absolutely right Ana. We mothers are the most exhausted and have to do the most work, always. And we always seem to put ourselves last because of our dear natures of wanting to serve others so much. Even just changing the way we eat a bit can make a huge difference. It’s amazing really. Thanks so much for your comment. Have a nice day!
Well, my pregnant daughter is in labour as I type! Reading your article about increasing protein intake, I can see she pretty much followed these guidelines while she was pregnant. She kept well throughout most of her pregnancy, apart from early morning sickness. I’m sure she’ll produce a bouncing healthy baby!
Congratulations Kathy! I remember now that you were expecting. Hope everything goes well for your daughter and grandchild. Let me know how they are next time I hear from you. Best!
While I don’t think we need to eat tons of protein, I am certain that we should include a reasonable amount of quality protein in our diets. It is essential for good cell and brain development.
By quality – I don’t mean sausages and burgers. I’m talking fish eggs, a little cheese now and then, and quality lean meats,
I imagine having an appropriate amount of protein is an absolute must when pregnant.
You’ve got some nice meal plans there.
I agree that many over eat protein when it’s not necessary. A more plant based diet is much healthier for you in the long run in prevention against diseases and the like. But I do know that at certain times, especially when pregnant, it’s quite necessary in order to function well. You’re quite right about fish and quality lean meats. Thanks for your comment Eoinmc!
