Have you seen the movie GATTACA? There’s a scene where the parents are choosing to have a boy for their next baby. They want their son to have a brother.

If only it was that simple. Now, of course, in certain in vitro situations you can absolutely choose the sex of your baby.

However, most of us stick to the natural option of taking things as they come. But what if you could influence the sex of your baby naturally?

Picking Your Baby’s Gender

Way back in the 60’s, the Shettles method came about. Because your husband makes two kinds of sperm in order to conceive baby boys or baby girls, you know you have only two possibilities. Right? Everyone knows this. 🙂

But Dr. Shettles came up with a method to help you influence whether or not baby boy sperm or baby girl sperm gets to your egg faster. There’s a distinct difference between male sperm and female sperm.

Male sperm are like this:

have a smaller Y-chromosome
are physically smaller in size
move faster through your cervical mucus
die faster because of your vaginal pH

Female sperm are the opposite:

have a larger X-chromosome
are physically larger in size
move slower through your cervical mucus
live longer in your vaginal environment

So based on these criteria, the theory is that you can time your intercourse just right and use either sperm type to your advantage. How the heck is this done?

How To Conceive A Baby Boy

Because you want your husband’s little boy sperm to reach your egg first, this is what you do.

Don’t have sex the week before you ovulate.
Then do it the day before and the day of that you ovulate.
Have the hubby come in from behind so his sperm is farthest toward your cervix as possible.
Help yourself orgasm just before or at the same time your husband does.
Then stay away from each other for another four to five days.

When you orgasm, it creates a more alkaline environment instead of acidic one that’s more favorable for male sperm.

Our Experience With This Method

We wanted a boy to be our first child. Of course, we were going to love our first born no matter what sex they were. But we thought it couldn’t hurt to try.

So we did this and it worked! Now, there’s no way I can possibly guarantee that if you follow this method that you’re guaranteed to have a boy. With our next two children we weren’t trying specifically for anything and we still had boys!

The likelihood of this working for you CAN BE around a 75% - 80% chance.

Maybe we just only capable of having boys. 🙂 In any case, the likelihood of this working for you CAN BE around a 75% - 80% chance, according to Dr. Shettles. Some studies like this one even refute the possibility of this even working.

But it’s worth a shot right? However, you may try this and get a girl every time. Who knows.

How To Conceive A Baby Girl

I have no experience with this. But if you’re itching for a girl, then you follow an opposite procedure.

Have sex 3-4 days before you ovulate.
Avoid each other until about 3 days after you ovulate.
Do this front to front so your husband’s sperm is slightly away from your cervix.
Avoid orgasm yourself at all costs.

Again, you may follow through with this schedule perfectly and still end up with a boy. But every little bit helps, I think.

Now if only there were a method to conceive twins of both genders. That would be something! 🙂

Extra Tips To Make This Work

Now there a couple of things you need to make sure of in order to pull out all the stops. If you’re going to make this much effort to conceive the baby that you want, then you may as well do a couple of other things that will definitely help.

Make Sure Of Your Cycle

Have a history of at least a couple of months that you’ve tracked your period. You want to be completely accurate to the very day that you start your period. From this you can count back 14 days and know exactly when you will ovulate.

There are a bunch of free trackers and apps that will help you do this. The app that I currently use is called Eve. I don’t love it. But I will be doing a review soon on more of the best pregnancy apps out there so you can use the best too.

Have Great Foods That Increase Fertility

Incorporate these into your diet the week before and the week of your ovulation.

dark leafy greens every day
eggs every morning
fish, or fish oil supplements consistently
lots and lots of water

You also want to avoid things that can screw up your vaginal pH. DON’T HAVE:

coffee
alcohol
processed junk food

Simple enough.

Use Essential Oils

A bunch of different essential oils are excellent for helping with your fertility as well as increasing your libido. These are some of the best.

Diffuse all of these in the air the days you are going to get frisky. 🙂

Don’t Stress About It

Getting all worked up about conceiving just makes things worse. It increases stress hormones that interfere with your natural libido and feel-goods. If you’ve been trying to conceive for some time, then trying for a specific sex may not be the best thing for you because it limits how often you try.

But keeping things in perspective, relaxing, and enjoying the intimate moments can create an environment that no calendar or tracker can fully create. Enjoy your time with your husband and relish the thought of the dear baby that is to come, no matter of they’re a boy or girl.
