You’ve decided that you want to have your baby birthed naturally.  That’s a HUGE step!  You’ve made the decision!

Some moms hem and haw for months thinking that they’ll try it if things look good while they’re in labor.  But you know what makes you DIFFERENT than them?

You’re going to make it happen.

You’re preparing yourself and

  • doing it at the right time,
  • setting yourself up for success, and
  • doing all in your power to create the experience you want as much as possible for you and your baby.

But are you nervous?  You must have a few jitters still.  I know I did… each time, even after having had previous natural births.  And if you don’t that’s excellent.

But it’s totally OKAY if you have a few things on your mind that may still make you uncomfortable thinking about, or may be causing a little anxiety.  We are going to conquer those things right now so you can know how to be fearless!

How To Be Fearless

I was working on a big project recently and decided to create this series about how to be fearless.  And an excellent acronym came of it.  So you’re going to learn the steps of how to be F.E.A.R.L.E.S.S. and we’ll get to what it all means in a minute.

When you go through these steps, you will have all the backing and support that you need in order to move forward, take the next step, and not look back.

So first, what does F.E.A.R.L.E.S.S. stand for?

F = Face
E = Examine
A = Accept
R = Research
L = Listen
E = Emotions
S = Stop
S = Smile

Now just breathe.  That may seem like a long complicated list of steps to take in order to just overcoming some lingering doubt.

But trust me….

When you’re in the middle of your labor and life is slamming you in the face with intensity, all of these steps will have laid out your worries in a fashion that helps you knock life right back so you can move with it instead of against it.
  • You’re going to have the right belief system that will SUPPORT you, instead of hinder you when that miraculously momentous time comes.
  • You’re going to know that you’ve overcome anything that will try and trip you up.
  • You’ll have the knowledge of why you feel the way you do and what to do about it when your feelings may seem out of control.
  • You’re going to get through this and I’ll help you.

Face It

First off:  F is for Face It.  Stare right back at it.  Whatever ‘it’ is, you’re going to choose to be aware that it exists.

The thing you fear or may be concerned about could be any, all, or none of these things:
  • not knowing how to big birth
  • fear of pain during labor
  • that something may go wrong
  • that you’ll give in and just take the epidural or c-section
  • your loved ones won’t support you

Whatever it is, bring it to the forefront of your mind and focus on it.  You cannot overcome something if you don’t know how to see it.

For example, when you’re hiking and a log has fallen across the trail, can you step or climb over it without even seeing it?  You have to accept that it’s there.  You have to size it up in order to know what you have to do to get over it.  Is it large enough that you have to climb some to get over it?  Or can you simply step over it carefully so you don’t fall?

It’s the same with your fear.

What To Consider

Let’s say you have some anxiety about that fact that your husband or family doesn’t want you to have a natural birth.  They feel it’s not the best option and are pressuring you to just go the ‘traditional’ route.  You love them and want them on your side, but YOU feel that they’re wrong.  You have YOUR desires and wish for them to be honored.

These are some things to consider with whatever your fear is.

  1. How big of a hurdle is that?
  2. Do you think that your relationships with your loved ones are strong and respectful enough that after you express your desires that you’ll be respected too?
  3. Or are things so bad that you don’t even want to bring up the subject because you know it will only cause contention?
  4. Is it going to be a BIG hurdle or a smaller one?
  5. Will it take A LOT of effort or something that you just need to clear off your plate with a few simple moments?

If your hurdle is so large or painful that it causes you to just want to skip it, sadly that’s the WRONG thing to do.  When you bury things deep down that are spoiling you rotten, it just festers and boils until it can no longer be contained.  We both don’t want you to end up being disappointed or upset because that fear overcomes you in the heat of the moment when the pressure is too great.

This is your baby, your body, your birth, your decision.

If you’re thinking about other things in your life besides birth, that’s to apply the same principles to them too.  I, myself, am hoping to read Becoming a Woman of Faith and Confidence in order to tackle other areas of my life as well.

Steps To Take Right Now

Here’s what you can do to Face your worries and accept what you need to do to deal with them, large or small.

1 - WRITE DOWN YOUR FEARS

If you have more than one thing confronting you, write ALL of them down.  Don’t rationalize or tell yourself that they’re minuscule and to not bother.  Own up to how you feel.

It’s NOT a bad thing to accept how you feel about something, at all!

It does NOT diminish you to be afraid or anxious about something, no matter what the world tells you.

You are NOT weak or lacking in any way to have doubts in your abilities.

I was recently reading a book, Money Making Mom, and I have now come to love this quote from it.  It’s simple, but very profound.

“Your are enough.”  —Crystal Paine

The context was different, but it can be applied to anything our lives.

2 - SCALE THEM

Assign a value to your fears.  Such as on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 is minor, and 10 is major.  If you have a major worry that is your primary thing to deal with, rate it on the higher end.  If you have a little fear about something minor, but it’s not a major concern that will take a lot of time to overcome, rate it lower.

Now put all your fears in order from the most significant (highest number) to the least (lowest number).  They’re ALL important, but you can tackle the tougher ones from the beginning and get them out of the way first so that the remainder may not even become issues after all.

3 - WHO IS INVOLVED

Depending on what your fears are, consider what other individuals in your life will play a role in you overcoming them.  What I mean is,

  1. Do you need to incorporate someone who doesn’t support you?
  2. Will help from your husband be necessary to deal with this fear?
  3. Do you need to get help from someone else to move forward?

Write down with each of your fears the people that will be necessary to help you move past your issues.  Whether they be good or bad relations in support of you are not, keep in mind who they are so that they are considered appropriately for your situation.

4 - MAKE A PLAN

In the next few posts on this series when we touch on Examining, Accepting, and doing Research, you’ll be able to make a plan to move forward.  Just know that it’s coming and you’ll be well on your way to reaching a point where you can simply tear up and throw away what you’ve just written down.  There IS a light at the end of the tunnel and you’re going to get through this.

You can do hard things!  Even give birth naturally.

If mental anxieties and relaxation are a concern for you, look at this birthing course and make it a part of your plan as you move through this series.

  1. As a woman who gave birth to three healthy children and needed epidurals for two of them, I found this article to be really fascinating! I wanted to have an epidural in fact for my third child but I was induced and he came before they could administer it. I think the concept is wonderful but its not possible for everyone. For women like me who develop autoimmune issues during pregnancy, subsequently placing them in the “high risk” group, this wasn’t an option for me.

    1. Hi Lynn. One thing that I’ll always say is that I believe modern methods with child birth can be life savers. Even though they are not my first choice. I will never turn down something like a c-section if it means saving the life of my child. But I also want mothers to know that they are naturally capable of everything else too.

      Yes, unfortunately some mothers are in situations where they may not be able to birth naturally. And that’s okay. It’s no failing on their part whatsoever. I just don’t want woman who can birth naturally believing that they can’t because of misinformation.

      Thank you for your comment! I love hearing mother’s perspectives, even ones who have not been able to have natural births.

  2. This is an excellent post for soon-to-be moms, especially first time moms! I really love your acronym for fearless! Being a mom myself, I remember two years ago when giving birth to our son that mindset is everything when going through a natural birthing process. Your advice to FACE whatever your fears are is so true and really holds the power to then setting you free from stress and anxiety before and during labor.
