When you become a parent, your perspective on life and priorities shift a complete 360 degrees. With that comes a complex relationship change with your husband. All of a sudden he may feel that he is no longer the priority.
Too quickly, he may become the object of disregard when there is a baby to feed. Sleep becomes more important than communicating to him. How do you keep your relationship strong when you through a baby into the mix?
How do you find ways to show your husband you love him still? It seems that once you become parents, your relationship is either strengthened immensely or just completely forgotten about. Too often it’s the latter, sadly.
Everyone struggles with this. Change throws a wrench into the perfect situation you had, and you have to put all the pieces back together while still keeping your head above the water.

Ways To Show Your Husband You Love Him
Right now you may be thinking, “Yeah, but Sarah, I’ve already got a million demands on me and how am I supposed to baby my husband too?” Good question. It’s hard when you’re sleep deprived or have three toddlers running around causing chaos. It’s hard when he goes off to work all day and your resentment can grow when he gets to sleep all night.
I’m not suggesting that you have to keep the habits and traditions you had with your spouse perfectly in place even when children come into the picture. I’m talking about doing the little things that can still be done no matter what, that still make a difference.
When he sees that you are still genuine in your love for him, he will recognize that and help make your load much lighter in the end.
So how can you show your husband love amidst a frantic and demanding life? Here are three things that go a long way.
Learn His Love Language
There’s an excellent book called The 5 Love Languages that I wish I had read years ago. It discusses all the different ways people show love and feel loved. Perhaps something that you really enjoy from your husband isn’t at all what he enjoys. Understanding the best way that makes him feel loved will do wonders in how he feels from your actions.
You can take a quiz that will help you better understand each other’s love language, and you may have a few different ones. That actually makes it easier because you have more options to work with. My primary love language is acts of service and my husband’s is words of affirmation. We constantly have to work at it because we’re very different that way.
Continually Date Your Husband
I know this one is hard. The demands on your schedule and time, arranging babysitters, it’s all a big hassle more often than you want. But ask yourself what your priority is. If you have to take the baby with you, go ahead; they’ll likely sleep most of the time anyway, right?
Find ways every single week to have alone time with your husband away from the kids and the noise. Pick the same night each week and stick to it. If you have to wait until the kids are asleep so you can just watch a new movie with some popcorn, do it.
Serve Him Everyday
If your husband’s love language is acts of service, then you’ve got a double advantage here. But either way, serving your husband shows respect and true Christ-like love. This may differ greatly from couple to couple because of circumstances and personalities. But there are things you can do that I think most men will appreciate.
- wash his clothes and put them away just how he likes them to be
- make his favorite dinners and desserts regularly
- help him clean up messes from his projects he’s working on
- complete one of the chores that he normally does
- offer to stay home with the children while he goes and does something himself
- make it so you can take him to a show or game that he’s been wanting to see
- assist him on his projects and roles so he can complete them faster
- offer to cut his hair or shave his beard
- have his favorite drink and treat ready so he can watch the big game
Whatever it is, service shows a love that can only be expressed that way. He will take notice and start to serve you back.
My husband is an introvert and he can get really drained mentally and emotionally from taking care of our boys all day. So when I get home and on the weekends, I do everything I can to give him alone time with peace and quiet. Just today, we’re going to a sleepover at the grandparents house tonight so that he can have an entire day all to himself.
I could come home from work each day and concede that because he’s the stay at home parent, he should be the one to prepare dinner, like a stay at home mother typically would. But that’s not how our relationship best works.

Find out what he enjoys and focus on them, not what you particularly enjoy all the time. Then your relationship will become much more kind, tender-hearted, strong, and lasting.
My husband’s love language is words of affirmation, as I mentioned. So I try to validate him on a regular basis, leave notes of love and encouragement, genuinely compliment him, and say thank you often.
It’s made a big difference in our relationship. We’re certainly not perfect, but I feel that we’re stronger now than we were previously. I want it to stay that way, even get better. Hopefully, you do too. What do you do to show your husband love?

Great advice here. This is definitely something which I feel my husband and I now need to work on, whereas it came so easily before we had our son. Our little boy is almost 2 years old now, and we had just started to get back into a loving lifestyle with date nights, since we were finally comfortable leaving our son with a babysitter, but I’m now expecting with number 2 so things will no doubt get tough again.
One thing that we do, which may sound sad to others, is that we play a board game every now and again. It makes us spend time together and talk, rather than just sitting and watching to. It means we don’t need a babysitter either because we just do it at home when our boy is in bed.
Thanks for the reminder that I need to make the effort when number two arrives in a few months’ time!!!
It is such a hassle, I know! We haven’t had regular date nights for years. I’m gonna get some of the board games out now. Thanks, Caroline!

Sara, I really like your article. Too many couples lose their connection with one another when they have children. It’s easy to get wrapped up in day to day routines and become to tired to put an effort into the relationship with your partner. You paved a road that is easy to understand and provided a few ways to reconnect.
Hi Calvin. Thanks for your comment. Maybe you can suggest a few things for yourself and your wife. 🙂 Have a great weekend!

Great post, Sarah!
Coming from the viewpoint of being a guy who’s never been married, I actually really enjoyed this! A lot of good points in there, and I’ve heard of The 5 Love Languages before, but never read through it before. I have had problems in relationships that could probably have been solved with some of the tips in here, so thank you for this!
Hi Taylor. You’re absolutely right. The 5 Love Languages applies to any relationship, married or not. They even have variations for single individuals and understanding the love languages of our kids. Give them a try and let me know how things go.
