I Started Winter Guard After 8 Years of Withdrawal

So in high school I was one of the ‘cool’ band kids.  I did marching band and was on the color guard.

If you don’t know what color guard is, it’s the pretty gals (sometimes guys) dancing and marching around on the field, darting to and fro between and around the band members while simultaneously waving, spinning, or tossing a flag, rifle, or saber.  In short, they’re the ones you REALLY watch while the whole marching band is performing.

Well I did this through college too, but then I got married…moved away…started a career…got boring.  And I didn’t do any spinning after that.

I Started Winter Guard

But this week my lovely sister-in-law invited me to join a local group full of independent, ‘semi-retired’ fellow guard-ians that show during the winter.  Best thing here is it’s indoors and I’m not worrying about some brass player that will run me over.

We had practice last night, two hours strait….and I was TIRED.  I haven’t spun in 8 years, let alone danced.  They’ve already had three practices and know three-fourths of the show already.

So I was blindly following and watching as best I could without getting run over, trying to keep my flag pole from hitting the floor because it was six feet tall and I’m only 5′ 4″.

But it was FUN!!  I had to pretty-please my way into getting my husband to let me join, leaving him with the boys for longer stretches of time on top of what he dearly does already.  I love him for it.

I was in the band too! I was terrible, but thoroughly enjoyed it. Your post made me so nostalgic!

Me too. I still feel like I’m 17 and just care free, performing for the rush of it. Hopefully our memories will last. Thanks Jenny!

    Sarah,
Isn’t it great doing something just because you enjoy it? I’m happy for you!

Absolutely! I figure, I’ve paid the fee so now it’s just a waste of money too if I backed out. Plus it gives my analytical side of my brain a break just doing something artistic. I’ll let you know how it pans out. Thanks for your comment!

Sounds like great fun, hard work though, dancing and carrying a flag! 🙂

It is hard work! Our ‘music’ isn’t really music. It’s spoken word with a little instrumentation in the back ground, so we have to go off of words instead of counts. I’ll keep everyone updated when we start performing in February. Thanks for your comment!

I swung a flag around for a year in high school. It was fun and an experience. What a wonderful story you have. I’m sure it’s nice to do something you enjoy again. Thanks! 🙂
