How to Give Natural Birth - You Can Do Hard Things

Did you think that you could easily and quickly learn how to give natural birth in just one article?  One moment of study and that you’d be proficient?  It’s not that easy; I truly wish it was.  But that is not the reality.

Modern society has ingrained in our culture that having a baby as naturally as possible is a magnificent feat that cannot be accomplished by all.  Well, that’s true because we’ve come to believe it and because we’ve created that reality for ourselves.

But think about the billions of women gone before you that have had their babies completely natural, every day, everywhere across the globe.  How did they accomplish that?

How To Give Natural Birth - History Lesson

For one, their bodies were already prepped and ready through their natural lifestyle.  Work and physical labor were necessary for survival.  The effort put in by everyday tasks rendering a strong body, capable of what was necessary to birth effectively.  Because we sit around all day working at our computers (I certainly do), we don’t have that stamina and strength; it’s been lost over generations.

There’s a great story in Dr. Bradley’s book that I love because it is an excellent example of my point.  He tells a story heard from a father that participated in one of his birthing classes.  The father told of how he was in the military, traveling with a compound across a country side full of rice fields.  The local women were working in the fields, carrying the big baskets on their backs, squatting down and hunched over harvesting the rice.

The group had to stop for some reason and this soldier was looking out at these women working.  He saw one that was heavily pregnant, working right alongside the other women.  He watched as she suddenly waddled over to the edge of the field in the grass and squatted down.  He thought she was merely going to the bathroom, relieving herself.

Well, after a moment, he realized that she was pushing, and GIVING BIRTH!  She soon brought out her baby, cord and all, and wrapped it up in the folds of her clothes.  Then she just went back to the fields and kept on picking rice.

None of the other women paid any attention and all moved on with their work as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.  What a tale to tell!  But the magnificent thing is, this STILL happens every day, we just don’t see it because it’s not a part of our everyday experiences.

Define It

I looked up a few of these words, just for kicks:  give and natural.

Give - to present voluntarily without expecting compensation; the quality or state of being resilient

Natural - existing in or formed by nature; any person certain to be very successful in an endeavor without much training or difficulty

So let’s replace How To Give Natural Birth with the following:

Successfully presenting an endeavor with resilience and without difficulty.

How does that sound?  It’s ALL about your mindset in approaching your baby birth.  When you truly believe that you are resilient and can bring your baby into the world with little difficulty, then you will be able to do it.  If you cannot believe in yourself then you won’t enjoy the experience.  So what do you need to do?

Steps To Take

You will find everything that you need here to have the birth experience you desire.  Here is what you can do in order to make that happen:

  1. Start a routine of Easy Pregnancy Exercises.  It is your best investment towards getting through your labor and delivery, plus making your pregnancy much more bearable.
  2. Commit now to eating healthy, not only for you but for your little one.  When you sign up for our mailing list, I’ll send you a download of my eBook Your Pregnancy Diet Plan.  There is tons of information in there, plus meals plans for an entire nine months to make eating easy and you won’t have to worry about getting all the right nutrients.  You can use the sidebar widget, or the one down at the very bottom of the page.
  3. Once you’ve implemented your exercise, master how to Relax During Labor.  It will provide you with the stamina and control over your feelings and emotions during labor pains that will render you able to complete the task without harmful drugs.
  4. Top off your expertise with an Online Birthing Class that will provide you with all the information, resources and options available in easy and understandable formats best suited for your needs.

Do not take these tasks lightly.  They require work, and lots of it, daily, continuously.  But when your desire to have your baby naturally works in you every moment of everyday, all of your choices and actions will be in line with that outcome.  You will become selfless in your state of mind and come to love your baby so much more because of the bond you create with them even before they’ve arrived.

    Hello Sara,
    thanks for a great post.

When I was expecting my first child I was planning to have have a natural birth - or as natural as I could. When I went to the doctors appointments I asked a lot of questions. Very often I was told I would get that information from the doctor at the hospital when I was giving birth. Since most of my friends had no children at the time and it was my first child I accepted that answere. Going to the hospital it was too late to have that information. It was not the time to make any desicions. What they suggested I agreed to.

Next time I will find out everything before. If I get a doctor that doesn’t explain what I want to know I’ll find a new one. I will read on the net. This site is a great resourse.

      Hi Marie.

I abdicate that very much-if you find your doctor is not working with your wishes and helping you the way they should be, get a NEW one. Same thing with the staff at the hospital, if they make you uncomfortable, ask for a different nurse. I talk more about that in this post here.

You’re right; there is very little time to learn things in the moment. It ABSOLUTELY needs to be done beforehand. But also know that things do happen and births can take different turns. And being open to considering options that may be necessary is a must as well.

With my first baby, half way through pushing, he stopped moving down my birth canal and we weren’t sure why. So the doctor said that everything still looked fine because his pulse was returning to normal after contractions. But that we didn’t want him to stay there long. So he suggested that we use the vacuum extractor and to also numb my perineum with a local anesthetic (like what they do at the dentist to numb your mouth).

I asked him to explain the risks and they were virtually zero, enough for me to agree to them. Two pushes later and he was out. But had I not done that, my boy may have been stuck for good, leading to no other alternative than a c-section. There are times when help is perfectly fine and shouldn’t be refused. But it’s up to each mother to decide for herself.

Thank you for sharing Marie. Sometimes we go through things that aren’t what we want, but we certainly learn from them in a positive way and things still turn out fine.

Amazing information here and a wonderful story to accompany it. Giving birth naturally is something more and more people seem to be looking at, but I agree it cannot be that simple.

This site offers great advice for people looking into this area of Child Birth…

    Thanks

    Chris

It’s simple and yet it’s not. Until a mom fully understands what they’re going to experience and then does go through, then it becomes more simplified. Thanks for your comment, Chris.

Cool site Sara. As a natural birth advocate and mother of 4, I think you make some very strong points for the case of natural child birth in a non icky manner. Well done 🙂

My wife knew she was going to have natural childbirth, so she did the pregnancy exercises. I asked her if she thought they helped and she said she was glad she did them!

That’s awesome to hear! Is she currently expecting, or was this in the past and you already have your kid(s) here? I would love to hear how she is doing or if she has any questions. Thank you so much for sharing Dave.

lovely site, and rich with content. I have a son of 4 yrs and a daughter of 2yrs. Both were brought into this world via a natural birth and also my wife never had any form of pain relief at all including gas or air tough cookie

What’s air tough cookie? I’ve never heard of that.

What a blessing for your family, especially your children. You’re most welcome to share your experiences on the Stories page. It’s always good to hear the father’s point of view. Thanks for visiting John!

    Sarah,
What a wonderful story. I will be sure to share with my daughter - I think we are so spoiled in our culture and should know about your information just to keep expectant healthy and make natural birthing, just what it is - natural. It provides a better experience for both the baby and the mother.

You have such a beautiful website and I enjoyed your story about the woman in the rice field. I am past the age of birthing, but I had my 4 children natural. I went to the hospital when my x-daughter-in-law gave birth and I was amazed how she felt nothing through her labor. The only time she experienced any pain was when she had to push. I don’t like pain, but I am glad mine were natural.

You have a wonderful and educating site, keep up the great work.

If she felt nothing then how did she even know she was in labor? Lucky her I guess. It makes me think of the movie What To Expect When You’re Expecting and the one young mother married to Dennis Quaid’s character just laughs and giggles through her labor and delivery, sneezing to get her TWINS out.

That’s wonderful to hear, Lureita. Please share your experiences on the Your Stories page so that other young mothers can find greater confidence in their choices. I appreciate your comment!
