Since you never know how long your labor is going to be, it’s no wonder that you want to know how to speed up labor so that it’s as quick as possible. I don’t think that a single one of us wants to be in labor for hours and hours on end. I have a sister in law that had a 30-hour labor—yikes!
But there are things that you can easily do to make yours even just a couple of hours. Be sure to follow these tips for quickly and easily speeding up your labor in natural ways.
9 Ways To Speed Up Labor
These do NOT include a pitocin drip or having your bag of waters manually broken. Your doctor may likely try and augment your contractions with either one of these because they’re the traditional methods. But you DON’T need them.
Don’t believe them when they try to push it on you. If you find that you’ve plateaued and haven’t progressed as quickly as you wish, it’s likely because they’re interrupting you and keeping you stressed.
If you find that you’ve plateaued and haven’t progressed as quickly as you wish, it’s likely because they’re interrupting you and keeping you stressed.
So find the ways to decompress and calm your body with any of the following easy methods and you’ll have that baby out in no time. I’ve done every single one of these with one birth or another and I KNOW they work.

Items Needed For Speeding Up Labor
- Rocking or bouncing on your birthing ball. Or if you’ve had an epidural, use a peanut ball while propped up.
- Small electrical candles that can be on while still keeping the room as dark as possible.
- Wear an acupressure ring to stimulate the right acupressure points.
- A playlist of relaxing spa music to listen to.
- Essentials oils for relaxation:
- Clary Sage essential oil for stimulating contractions.
- If you’re rocking while sitting on a toilet, keep your legs propped up with a squatty potty stool.
Walking
This is the #1 BEST way to get things going quickly. I can’t say enough about it.
- Not sure if you’re real labor? Walk.
- Do you want to sit down and wait them out? Walk.
- Feel like you don’t have the energy to? Walk.
- Angry at your husband for putting you in this position? Walk.
- Take the shuttle or park far away at the hospital? Walk.
Birth is all about movement. Imagine your baby trying to come through you’re birth canal like how you try to take a snug ring off your finger. It needs a little twisting, turning, and movement in order to come off easier. The same goes for your baby emerging.

Turn off the lights
When your brain starts to generate the hormone melatonin that helps you fall asleep, it also acts alongside a pathway that creates oxytocin too. When I was in labor with my third boy, I kept all of the lights off in the rooms that I was walking through. I got sleepy, but it was sure worth it. Just use electrical candles to limit the light.

Acupressure
There are certain energy points along the body that correspond to stimulating contractions and responses to the uterus. Applying pressure to these sends nerve signals and help increase your labor contractions. You can just an acupressure ring to make it easier.
- Hand Webbing. Between your thumb and forefinger on either hand, there is the mass of tissue and muscle. You can massage these firmly and squeeze gently for a few minutes at a time.
- Ankles. Just above the inside of your ankles lies another sensitive spot you can rub. Make your husband do it while he massages your feet in order to help you relax.
- Roof of the Mouth. Press your thumb into the top of your mouth and rub in circles. You can even suck hard on a lollipop too.

Relaxation
When you’re stressed, your tension inhibits your body’s ability to cycle forward with your hormones that control childbirth. There are myriads of things that you can do to promote relaxation during labor. My favorite thing is to listen to calming spa music, like Enya, and visualize peaceful places while breathing deeply.
Figure out what works for you and stick with it.
- progressive muscle relaxation
- visual imagery alongside meditation
I teach these and more relaxation techniques in my book that you can get here.

Sexual Stimulation
If you haven’t read the orgasmic birth post yet, do it now so that these next suggestions don’t throw you for a loop. This helps generate the oxytocin that your body needs to give birth.
- Sensual Touch. Caress and stimulate the areas of your body that help you enjoy private intimacy with your husband.
- Clitoris and Nipples. These spots are directly connected to the physiological reactions necessary for sexual experiences such as childbirth. Stimulating them will further your labor.
- Kissing. Having some intimacy with your husband during labor actually creates a better experience. There is a flow of energy through your body that it needs which can start with simply making out.

Exercise Ball
Sit on that birthing ball and make it your new best friend if you’re needing a moment from walking.
- Bounce on it. The motion of baby descending downward is further perpetuated.
- Rock on it. Getting that baby to fit just perfectly through a tiny opening is a fantastic feat. Rocking to and fro, front and back, in circles, whatever…will help your little one be positioned perfectly.

Move, move, move
Change your positions often if you don’t feel up to walking or using a birthing ball. Not everything will be comfortable, but go back and forth between two positions at the very least between contractions.
- squatting
- on all fours (hands and knees)
- leaning over the birthing ball
- on the toilet with a squatty potty
- standing and swaying
- dancing
- lunging carefully in any direction
Here I am just before our third baby was born, constantly moving around during labor. Yes, I absolutely wanted to just rest. But I kept moving because I knew how important it was; I ended up having a super fast labor!

Essential Oils
Have oils like lavender and frankincense diffusing to help you keep calm and relaxed.
Besides just using them to relax, you can use clary sage to help stimulate contractions. It’s been known to do so quite well when you apply it to the inside of your ankles, like the acupressure point above.

Laughing
Let’s face it. When you’re having a good time with some laughs, are you stressing out or tense with anxiety? Not likely. Find something you can joke about for the moment and let your husband keep you smiling during this magical time.
It will promote the positive feedback your body needs to complete all the hard work it’s trying to do. Your labor WILL come to an end and it will seem faster than it actually was once you’ve come full circle. Just make sure that you’re doing SOMETHING, anything to keep your labor progressing.

To Summarize
Don’t let your nurse or doctor pressure you into having a pitocin drip or breaking your water. It can help, but it can also hinder. Exhaust all other options FIRST.
- Walking
- Turn off the lights
- Acupressure on your hand webbing, inner ankles and roof of the mouth
- Relax
- Sexual stimulation of sensual areas
- Birthing ball
- Moving and changing positions often
- Clary Sage essential oil
- Laughter
Relaxation is most often the hardest thing for women to do during their labor. But it’s so simple to learn how, it’s no excuse to have a difficult labor when you can easily learn it.

Then before you know it, you’re ready to start pushing out your baby, or breathing through their descent from heaven to earth. And it’s all downhill from there.
What have you done to keep your labor going as quickly as you can? I once saw this mom dancing to mega hip-hop jams in order to keep her momentum up! Let me know in the comments and I’d love to hear your best tips and tricks. Cheers!

Shower! It was the best advice I got. Aim the shower stream at your lower back and stay in as long as you can. It helps make the contractions strong and relax yourself. 4 hours of labour/pushing.
Love this! Usually it’s a bath that’s recommended because moms usually want to sit. But the standing and swaying movement with the flow of water would be great! Next best thing to a water birth. 🙂
Glad that it worked well for you Amber.
This is a helpful list. Women who are preparing for the most intense exertion they will ever experience need to know what to do in that difficult moment to keep things moving and positive.
I had a natural hospital birth with my daughter (read my story here: https://mamarissa.com/my-natural-hospital-birth-story/) and even though it was a beautiful experience and not as painful as I was expecting, it lasted 37 hours. I did do some walking and changing positions, but I was afraid of wearing myself out. However, I plan to be more active throughout labor next time in hopes of speeding it up!
So glad it worked out for you Marissa! Births usually go faster each time. 🙂
I have been induced 4 times already m pregnant with my 5 th child and am 2 weeks overdue.have tried all the things a mom could try walking bouncing on ball sex essential oils and still nothing.get very bad contractions but they eventually go away.im wondering if my muscles have gotten lazy and if I can’t go into real labor anymore cause I have been induced to many times.
I doubt that. Sometimes even getting stressed over it will delay it. When you’re anxious, you’re adding the cortisol hormone into your blood stream, and this directly competes with your natural oxytocin and other birth hormones, making the process more difficult. You’ve likely had your baby already. But just remember to relax as much as possible.
I have two children, both natural births. My first was a 19-hour labor, and everyone told me my second would go faster, but my second was 26-hours. However, my second child I was so much more in control and relaxed. I was able to sleep during the early stages of labor, and I even took a nap during transition just 30 minutes before she was born! The midwife was pleasantly surprised that I was joking with my husband between pushes! I don’t think I would trade those extra hours of “relaxed” labor for something more intense, just to get to the finish line faster! 😉 Because I was able to relax, I was enjoying my labor, being present mentally during it all, and had a wonderful second birth experience – even the extra hours of it!
That’s wonderful to hear! Thank you for sharing.
I loved all of these. I’m going to do a lot of walking due to me already being 1 cm dilated. I’ll be 38 weeks this Thursday.
Awesome! The more the better. 🙂 Best with everything.
I had real labor for hours I was contracting however I wasn’t diolating fast enough so I was sent home this is day 3 i have a high tolerance for pain so I can’t tell this is baby 5 and I still have same issues can never tell
It’s amazing how well some women can deal with the effects of childbirth on their bodies. I always thought that moving around too much would somehow be harmful for the baby but I guess if you kept it to a minimum it would be beneficial for your health as well as the babies.
Hi Chris! It’s quite the opposite. Movement is SO much better for both the mother and the baby. Think of it like exercise–the more you move, the stronger you are. It applies to both mom and baby in every stage of pregnancy and labor. Thanks for your comment!
I’m so glad I found your blog. My sister is a first-time mother and she is a few days overdue. I had no idea that acupressure, laughing, and essential oils can actually be very useful to speed up labor! What are other good essential oils aside from Clary Sage which can help induce labor? I’ll also be sure to get her moving. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Julie! The best ways to naturally induce labor are actually sex and walking. And honestly, a little patience too. First-time moms tend to be pregnant longer than any other subsequent pregnancies. I know it’s the biggest drag, but it will all be over so quick!
I agree that those 9 ways do speed up labor as I had friends who benefited from walking, acupressure and the birthing ball.
Unfortunately, I had a long labor (24 1/2h) even though I have tried everything I was aware of.
I used the Clary Sage essential oil as few months before my birth I bought a book about essential oils in pregnancy. I did have strong contractions, but I was not dilating fast enough.
I can tell you that relaxation in the hospital jacuzzi and the birthing ball was helping me a lot.
It’s good to be prepared, and every person is different. It was my first child, and everyone was telling me not to expect him out after I sneezed:)
Hi Lena! I have yet labored in the water, but it’s something I definitely want to try in the future. Since my last labor was Precipitous Labor – Birth Without Waiting, I don’t know if I’ll have that opportunity. But I’m glad that it worked well for you.
Was this long labor for your first baby? Have you had any since that one? Once super nice thing about sequential babies is that they often are faster than the once before. Something definitely to look forward too.
I really like all things that are natural as we’re here to tell the tale so it cant be bad. Childbirthing natural from what I know is a somewhat contentious issue but your 9 ways to speed up labour was very interesting and well written. You explained every point well and I found that it was easy to comprehend so great job on the post and I wish you well.
Thanks Simon! Feel free to share.
I have to say, I am genuinely impressed. The meticulous work that went into this article , and depth of coverage makes me kind of regret that it wasn’t around when my wife went through her labor last year. It was extremely short(less than a couple hours) but she had a lot of false labor leading up to it, and it was nerve racking. What I like best here is that you leave no stone unturned. I found questions sprouting in my head when reading, and you seemed to immediately address them afterwards.
I’m glad to have met your expectations, Nate. Thank you for such nice sentiment! How did your wife’s delivery go? I’m always here to help for when your next little one comes around. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
Hello, my name is Patrick. I was looking over your site, it’s coming along great. Your content is professional looking and well written.
Also, I love your theme for your website. I’ve seen more than a few websites with this theme. The more I look at it the better it looks.
Your dropdown on your pages looks great. Easy to navigate through. I like how you got your social media widget set up. However, there is one thing, I would try and add an amazon widget. You could probably find a lot of good products on your niche.
Other then that you are doing a great job. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, Patrick!
Hi your site is awesome I loved it, wish your site had been round when I was having my children.
I just loved the whole concept of your site and enjoyed reading it. I have book marked it for my son and daughter in law for future reading as they are trying for a baby. Do you have any tips on how to conceive they have been trying for nearly 2 year. I have told them stop trying forget temperatures and charts and just relax and have fun.
You know, if they’ve been actively trying to two years, it’s possible that there is a fertility issue they may be dealing with.
But I would say the best thing to do is NOT have intercourse every single day during her fertile week. Have sex every other day, even every two-three days. Why? Because his sperm can’t repopulate that fast if they’re doing it daily. Giving his sperm count time to catch up will put much more in there and up the odds to conceive higher than doing it every day.
Then I would also say that she can lay down in bed for around ten minutes after he’s ejaculated. It gives the sperm time to crawl up her mucus membranes past the cervix and stay inside better. Once she’s gotten up and used the restroom, a major portion of semen has already come out.
Pass it along and let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for commenting and sharing, Jo!
I wish I had known all this when I was having my youngest child I was in labour for 36 hours and that’s not counting the labour at home before the 36 hours in hospital.
I also had a drip inserted and my waters broken with all 4 births and made to stay in bed even having to use a bedpan for toilet needs, mind this was 25 year ago things have changed for the better now thank god. I remember being a young 23yr old in premature labour with my 1st child with my husband at my side i was frightened and crying and wanted my mam and was told by a very stern midwife to shut up and my mam couldn’t come in I would see her when the birth was over and I was back on the ward. Bad eh and they wondered why I was stressed lol.
Oh, dear Jo… I certainly hope that your other births were much better experiences. And even with a midwife?! That’s so harsh to be told such things during such an immense time. Was this first one without an epidural? It seems that all the wrong things happened here, just because people weren’t very caring.
That’s why I abdicate in writing Birth Plans that also discuss the fact that you mothers can get different doctors and nurses. Sometimes we just HAVE to push back, hard!
Thankfully, it seems that times are turning around from those days I hear so much about with unpleasant birth experiences. Thanks for your comment!
Great blog. Thanks for offering tips for husbands. I think as husbands we often feel like an audience rather than a participant in the child birth process.
The tips you offered that a husband can help with are much appreciated.
Thanks and You’re Welcome, Ron!
Hi Sarah,
Great blog. You offer a great deal of information to help with a positive and hopefully quick labor. It is very helpful that you include things that the husband can do to help calm his wife during the process.
I think most husbands feel helpless to a great extent during the child birth process. Husbands are more like an audience that a participant. You have offered ways for the husband to be helpful.
Letting everyone know you have personally used these methods lets us know you are knowledgeable about the subject.
I agree, Ron. Many husbands feel just terrible when they’re wife is going through such an experience because they feel helpless. That’s why I encourage fathers to take as role and part as significant as the mother because it IS a partnership. The father is NO LESS important than the mother.
That’s why I love the Birth Relaxation Kit hypnobirthing program I support so much because there are resources and materials there specifically for the husbands.
