The number one fear that you most likely have as a pregnant mother is the pain of childbirth. The contractions, the bleeding, the tearing, the stitches, the back labor … everything! Your whole entire life you’ve been taught that it’s going to be the worst experience ever.
“You’ll be begging for the epidural,” they said. “Why would you want to go through all of the pain?” they inquire. “Why are you setting yourself up for failure?” they accuse.
Take a deep breath. It’s not your fault that this is naturally ingrained into your subconscious mind. The media, our mothers’ experiences, and the culture of western medicine has helped you believe that giving birth is the most painful thing on earth. Well … they’re right, when you BELIEVE that.
What You Already Have That Helps Your Birth Contractions Feel Good
You have a POWERFUL tool on your side when it comes to the experiences you’re going through as a mother. It’s your brain.
Your brain has the capacity and capability to make you feel the worst pains in the world when you believe there’s no hope, when you aren’t aware of other options, and when you choose to accept that fate. The good news is that there is another way. This IS another option.
Natural birthing mothers understanding how their awareness and perceptions about birth, their bodies, and the capabilities of their minds work in harmony with their bodies. You can have the same.
So forget about what you’ve heard, seen, or may even believe about how painful childbirth is. Now let’s focus on how you can make those contractions feel good! Yep, you read that right. Your contractions and labor pains while giving birth can feel fabulous! How in the world can we help make that happen?
How Your Birth Contractions Can Be Pleasurable
By using the power of your brain and what it is doing for your body during labor and delivery, you can absolutely have a birth that is enjoyable. Not the screaming fiasco that you are picturing in your head. All it takes is some awareness and a few choices.
From another perspective, I want you to understand this too: birth CAN be pleasurable! It’s the SAME area of your body that is geared toward pleasure. When you’re having an intimate sexual experience that you’re enjoying, it’s all being felt ‘down there.’
The same goes for birth. An intensely powerful experience is happening ‘down there’ with the same stimuli as that of sex. When you orgasm, your vagina and cervix contract and relax over and over again. When your cervix dilates, it’s contracting. When your uterus and vaginal birthing canal are pushing your baby out, they’re contracting. They’re all just muscle. And what do muscles do? Contract and relax, it’s their job.
It’s how you use your brain during either experience (and especially birth) that greatly determines how you will feel overall. Make sense? Keep reading.
Understanding The Power Of Your Brain During Birth
But first, let’s cover some basic physiology that I want you to understand about your body: the neurological paths in your brain that correspond to pain and pleasure are in the same place.
This means that in certain situations and with certain neurological triggers from your environment, you can control whether or not you will feel pain or pleasure. You do this by simply choosing. Let me give you an example.
Your vagina, cervix and everything else that’s sensitive down there, is stimulated when you have sex. Can it be painful? Can it be pleasurable? Yes and yes. But have you ever let your mood or current state of mind affect how you were feeling in an intimate moment? I’m sure all of us have, especially being female.
- When you put yourself into a pleasurable state, that is what you’re going to feel.
- When you put yourself into an annoyed state, you’re going to feel pain or major discomfort.
The AWESOME thing is that you can choose your state of mind! You can do the things that you know will put you in the pleasurable state.
Now compare this to labor and delivery and it works much the same way.
- If you are in an aware state that is geared toward a calm and comfortable, even pleasurable experience, that is most likely what you will have.
- If you’re in a stressed, worried and tense state, that’s going to influence your body to give you a tough birthing experience.
Yes, there are millions of factors at play. But you STILL have a magnificent tool on your side that can either work WITH your BODY, or against it: your brain. You just have to figure out how to use it right in any situation, including birth. Because who controls your brain? You do.
The Enemy Of Your Natural Birth
So let’s talk about what’s going to happen if you’re not aware of how you can use your brain and body to assist you during birth, rather than work against them. Because all too often, it’s the negative way around for most mothers.
Your body has been programmed with years of experiences to automatically do things a certain way. I’m going to call this the Fear, Pain, Tension Cycle. Anytime that you feel fear, pain or tension, your brain and body’s natural reactions are to continue within that cycle until one of those factors is completely removed.
Let me explain what I mean.
Imagine someone has jabbed you with a sharp object. It hurts, of course. What do you automatically to? You flinch away, tensing your muscles in order to move away quickly. Then say that person tries to come at you again with another poke. Are you scared of feeling that pain again? Sure you are.
Now with this metaphor, if you never got away from this person trying to hurt you, or you didn’t do something to stop them, the cycle would continue. But, obviously you wouldn’t let that happen, right? Of course.
Okay, now let’s apply this same principle to the experience of your birth.
Imagine you’re feeling a contraction, deep in your pelvis, and it’s intense, even hurts some. Your automatic reaction to this is to tense up, hold your breath, and just resist the feeling until that contraction is gone. But the difference here, is that you can’t move AWAY from the contraction, like you could move away from a sharp object in our previous example.
You can’t get away from them. They just keep coming, and they keep getting stronger each time. Are you going to keep tensing up and fight against them? Sadly, this is what MANY women do, and it’s the exact OPPOSITE of what you should do.
When you tense up, hold your breathe, just “hang on” to get through it, and try to resist feeling any more pain … you’re actually perpetuating the Fear, Pain, Tension Cycle. You feel the pain of a contraction, then you tense up, which leads to even more pain (this cycle can work in reverse), and greater fear for the upcoming contractions because you know they’ll get stronger.
With that realization, let’s step back. “Okay Sarah,” you may be thinking. “It’s obvious to me that I can get away from someone trying to jab a sharp object at me. I could even take it away from them and throw it far away so it’s not a problem. How in the world do I get away from my contractions so this painful cycle can stop?”
I’m glad you asked.
Putting This Enemy Of Your Birth In Its Place
You can’t literally run away from your contractions, but you can remove a factor of this cycle so that it cannot work against you. You could remove Fear, Pain, or Tension by themselves, or even a couple of them together. Most mothers opt to remove the Pain factor by getting an epidural or a complete Cesarean.
It sure seems easier. I know we can all agree that it’s difficult to remove Fear. Now removing tension … is that even possible? If your body is naturally reacting to your contractions with tension, are you going to be able to remove the Tension factor?
Yes. You can. You can even remove ALL three from the cycle so that NONE of them have any power over you. How can you do this? It’s all with that marvelous tool I talked about a few hundred words ago: your brain. You have the power within your brain to defeat all aspects of this Fear, Pain, Tension Cycle. I’ve done it. You can too.
You can even train your body alongside your brain so that they work together, enhancing your birthing experience instead of ruining it. It’s not your fault that this negative cycle is within you. It’s a part of all of us. It’s how your brain is doing it’s job to protect you from what seems like a threat.
However, by utilizing the right techniques and habits, with a great deal of awareness and understanding thrown in there, you can ensure that this enemy of your natural birth isn’t even something to worry about.
How To Conquer This Negative Cycle
There are many things that play a role in your birth. Your body, experiences, beliefs, baby, and abilities are all unique to just you. We all have different circumstances playing part in our pregnancies and birthing situations. I cannot factor in every single possibility for you.
What I can promise is that the steps followed to beat the Fear, Pain, Tension Cycle will absolutely prepare you for the best odds of success for getting through your natural birth with flying colors. And even if it doesn’t turn out exactly as you expect (no birth ever does), you are STILL going to have a much better experience because you’ve put these methods into place.
So what are you going to do to ensure that your contractions feel good and beat this enemy of your birth simultaneously? In just a few simple steps.
- Defeat Fear by overcoming what is keeping you scared, worried, or anxious.
- Defeat Pain by optimizing the molecules and cells inside of your body to work in your favor with strength.
- Defeat Tension by using your brain’s abilities to work with your body instead of against it.
Now that’s all wordy and such, but it’s really simple, like I said. Let’s just change the language to what I know you’re gonna understand. But I wanted to show you the progression first so that the even simpler steps don’t appear like lame, typical answers.
Defeating Fear By Overcoming
This may be the easiest aspect to understand. We’ve all tried to face our fears, or even cover them up and ignore them. Have you brushed aside something that has been bothering you? Leave it alone without dealing with it and it just might come crashing down upon you in the middle of the delivery room.
There are many ways to overcome your fears or “get over” them. There are hundreds of books on the subject. But the trouble is, we often don’t even know why we’re afraid of something. Or we aren’t aware that the reason we are anxious about something is actually a lie.
Sometimes it takes a ton of research to uncover the truth.
Sometimes it takes facing that fear head on.
Sometimes it takes another person’s perspective to help us get what’s really going on in our head.
Whatever you’re fearful of with your pregnancy or birth, let me help you overcome it. I’ve had three natural births in three years. I had different fears each time. But I figured out a way to overcome them, and each time it was from something I wish an experienced mother had simply told me before. Now I’m here for you.
Defeat Pain By Strengthening Your Body
Okay, here are those typical answers that I promised you. But I’ll explain why each one really matters from the perspective of a natural birthing mother. The most important ways you can overcome pain through strengthening your body:
- Exercise – specifically flexibility and strength training for support
- Nutrition – the right combination of micro nutrients and protein are essential for multiple reasons
- Rest – if you’re overtaxing yourself, it’s causing added strain
Hopefully you didn’t just roll your eyes. Yes, we all know exercise, rest, and nutrition are vital to our lives. So why do I have to repeat it? For two reasons: because we can ALL do better in these areas, and you have to do things a bit differently when pregnant.
Your exercise is going to feel different, your body is going to behave different, and there are certain kinds of exercises you should and should not do. Your body has to be flexible in certain ways to support that growing baby, and to further support it’s delivery. If you’re not strong or flexible in the right ways, you’re gonna have a rough time during labor and delivery.
Your appetite and cravings are going to be all over the place. Your body and baby are going to need different levels of certain nutrients or they are not going to grow or function well. Think of sickly plant that you’ve been trying to nurture since it was planted. But no matter what you do, it’s still needing something that you’re not providing it, but you don’t know what it needs.
The plant will likely still continue to grow, even if it’s not lush and flourishing. Your nutrition helps you flourish from the inside out and ensures that your baby is getting everything essential for their growth and development too.
Your sleeping habits and fluctuations of energy and exhaustion change from trimester to trimester. Some times these fluctuations can be easily avoided through proper ways of resting. Other times they’re necessary and can even be enjoyed. You just have to know which times are which and how to support them.
All three of these things working together are key components to strengthening your body and helping it defeat pain, not only during childbirth but at any time during life. “Okay Sarah, but I thought you said the key to defeating pain was also in my brain?” It sure is, and I’ll explain how these all tie together soon.
Defeat Tension With Relaxation
Hopefully this is obvious, but maybe it’s not. When your muscles and thoughts aren’t tensed, they’re relaxed. When you use the abilities you have with choice, you can choose to relax and let go of any tension or negativity. Sounds too easy though, I know. Because, if it is so easy, then why aren’t more mothers relaxing during labor?
They don’t have the simple techniques mastered.
They don’t have the knowledge that you’ll have with using powerful meditative imagery and positive emotions to support your labor.
They don’t understand how you can stop the negative tension with some regular practice.
They don’t know that they even have choices.
But you’re not one of them. You know that you can learn how to:
- master relaxation techniques, even with the application of pain
- use powerful imagery to create calming states
- put simple things together, like choice, breathing, and happy memories to assist your labor
It really just boils down to taking action and figuring some of these things out. I didn’t have a lot of things figured out the first time I was in labor, and I almost ruined the experience. But then I truly discovered how to use my mind to master my relaxation for fabulous and pleasurable second and third births. You can too because you’re in the right place.
How It All Comes Together
I said that defeating the enemy of your natural birth (the Fear, Pain, Tension Cycle) all came down to using your brain the right way. And it’s true. But it may not have been completely clear how that plays a role in strengthening your body against pain.
It’s easier to connect overcoming Fear with what’s going on inside of your head. And it’s easy to see how you defeat Tension with relaxation because you’re using experiences, knowledge, and other techniques you can easily learn.
But strengthening against Pain, yes, seems completely physical and focused on the body—your muscles, your diet, your exercise, etc. Yes, you’re right. But what part of YOU decides to keep exercises, chooses to put the proper nutrients in your body, and commits to keep going? It’s the faculties in your brain, your mind, your heart, and how they work together to support each other.
Make more sense now? If you want to get even deeper, it truly comes down to one single thing: choice. I’ve been mentioning it all along. How you:
- make your contractions feel good
- turn a painful experience of this nature into a pleasurable one
- go through all these new sensations with joy
It’s by choice. Consistent, educated choice.
Because You Have A Choice
Most women out there today don’t believe they have a choice with how they experience their birth. They’re driven by the Fear, the Pain, and the Tension they constantly feel during pregnancy and leading up to birth. But you’re not most women.
You NOW know the key things in making your contractions feel good. This means there is no reason to be afraid of the pain of your birth, right? *Smile*
It does take some work. But what marathon runner ever ran a great race without training and preparation? None. Your birth is a marathon, and what you decide to do during your pregnancy is the training and preparation time.
The difference is, a marathon runner can pull out of the race at the last second. You can’t. That baby is coming and it’s time to own up to that, take back the control that is rightfully yours, and CHOOSE to prepare for a fabulous birth. If you’re going to go through this, why not make it great?
Here’s The Next Step …
I teach every thing that I know to defeat the Fear, Pain, Tension Cycle in my natural birthing course. I even go into a lot more detail than just what we’ve touched on here. I mentioned that you need to know things like relaxation techniques and the right levels of nutrients to intake, and the right exercises for your body. But it’s too much to include fully here.
That’s why I created my Confident Mother Natural Birthing Course because I wanted to make sure pregnant mothers like you knew everything as much as possible from the get-go. When I was first pregnant, I thought I learned everything I possibly could beforehand. I’m an engineer by trade and knew how to do research and dig into the right sources, etc. But I had no idea about two-thirds of what I teach in my course.
It’s because I learned the rest with each successive birth.
- My first, I did many things wrong and almost failed my goal of having a natural birth. But I was so committed and had practically carved in stone my intentions for my birth, that I ended up defeating the Fear part of the cycle without knowing it.
- Then the second time I mastered my relaxation and easily overcome the Tension and had the calmest and most relaxation birth ever.
- With my third, I truly optimized overcoming pain through the proper diet and exercise, plus everything I had learned with my previous births, of course. Now I know that if I have another baby, I’ve got every single key that will unlock the doors along the path of a pleasurable natural birth.
It’s way more than just knowing how to have contractions that feel good. But it certainly is the start of it all because of the society we live in. That said, you can take advantage of everything I know by going through my Confident Mother Natural Birthing Course. I called it Confident because I know that you WILL be just that.
When you know that you have taken action against the enemy of your birth and chipped away the Fear, Pain, and Tension through what you’ve learned, you can’t NOT be confident. I sure am for you. You already have everything you need within you. It’s just tapping into that awareness and taking the action that ensures your best chances of success.
So your next step is to enroll in the Confident Mother Natural Birthing Course today. And by the way … it’s only $197! You’ll spend tens of thousands of dollars MORE in delivery care costs when you DON’T invest in yourself to ensure the best natural birth possible for you and your baby.
