Protect Your Nipples
Breastfeeding ain’t easy for mommas, and your nipples can feel sore and dry with all the hormonal changes and breastfeeding. Make sure you have a nipple butter or cream like Earth Mama’s handy. It’ll protect your nipples from dryness and keep them nourished.
Eat Foods To Increase Breastmilk
Add more of foods to your diet that are known to improve milk production. These include:quinoa, oatmeal etc.
Some herbs, particularly fenugreek, are known to support lactation as well. But make sure you get an “okay” from your doctor for any herb that you haven’t consumed earlier since they may interfere with any medication you might be on, or may cause an allergic reaction.
Increase Your Calories
Make sure you get 500 extra calories a day while breastfeeding. Adding healthy and nutritious foods to your diet that fulfill these calorie requirements help.
- green leafy veggies
- nuts and seeds
Just like pregnancy, the lactation period is crucial for your baby, as he’ll be getting all the nutrients and immunity strengthening agents from breast milk!
Try Different Nursing Positions
Experiment with different positions to find out which nursing position suits you best. Every mom has a different position that works best for both them and the baby. So the best way to know which one works for you is to experiment.
Lots of baby stores have gear that could help you adjust and find the best possible way to nurse your baby with ease, so don’t hesitate to check them out as well!

Carefully Consider Adding Formula
If breastfeeding is proving to be a bit more of hassle for you, consider alternating breastmilk and formula milk. This is way better than just relying on formula milk for your baby.
While formula milk itself doesn’t have any major harmful effects on your baby’s health, it definitely doesn’t have the capability to replace mother nature’s goodness!
Use Nursing Time To Your Benefit
Breastfeeding doesn’t have to take up all your time. How about some healthy snacking while breastfeeding to make up for the time? You can munch on:
- raw veggie sticks
- cheese cubes
- meal replacement bars
You can also catch up with some light reading while your baby is getting what he needs.
Pamper Any Breast Discomfort
The initial weeks of breastfeeding can be the toughest, and having to deal with breast engorgement doesn’t help. If you’re experiencing swelling and tenderness that’s painful, placing an ice pack can help.
You can also benefit by wearing the right maternity clothing and underwear, and using pillows to support you while you sleep.
Stimulate Milk Flow
Massaging your breasts gently and then placing a warm compress over them right before you’re about to nurse your baby can help boost milk flow and also reduce tenderness and sensitivity gradually.
Practising this on a regular basis can also help prevent and treat mastitis, an inflammatory breast condition experienced by most new moms.
Freeze Extra Milk
A stash of frozen breast milk can come handy during flights and trips where you’re taking your baby along and you don’t want to feed him in public. You can pump some breast milk beforehand and freeze them for future use.
While pumping breast milk and storing them, make sure all the bottles and containers as well as the pump is sterilized well, and wash your hands before you express or handle the breast milk.
Probiotics are super beneficial for a momma who’s breastfeeding, so if you haven’t focused on them yet, now’s the right time to do it! Include more of probiotic rich foods like yogurt, kimchi, kombucha etc in your daily diet.
Have Awesome Gear
Breastfeeding can be a problem when you’re on the move. Wear comfortable nursing tank tops and bras to make things easier, and always have a few extra water bottles handy.
This will help ensure proper sanitation of your baby gear (bottles and other essentials), just in case you don’t find access to clean water when you need it!
